Position Summary

Midsouth Steel is seeking an experienced Lead Painter to oversee the final stages of the painting process and ensure painted structural steel components meet company quality standards. This role is responsible for coordinating the unloading of painted materials, conducting quality inspections, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring production schedules are met.

The Lead Painter serves as a key liaison between the paint department, production teams, logistics, and management to ensure efficient workflow and timely delivery of finished products while maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards, including AISC requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Production Oversight

  • Oversee the unloading of finished parts and products from paint booths.

  • Monitor daily production schedules to ensure painted products are completed on time.

  • Coordinate with production teams to resolve delays, workflow issues, or quality concerns.

  • Ensure proper handling and transfer of painted materials to designated storage or processing areas.

  • Maintain organization and efficiency within the unloading area.

Quality Control

  • Perform visual inspections for paint defects including runs, uneven coating, missed spots, or other quality issues.

  • Conduct final inspections to verify products meet company and customer specifications.

  • Report defects or non-conformances and coordinate corrective actions.

  • Maintain records of paint inspections and documentation required for AISC compliance.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain logs of painted product output, defects, and rework requirements.

  • Ensure all paperwork related to finished goods is accurate and up to date.

  • Update job statuses and production information in PowerFab Go as required.

  • Communicate production status updates to management and other departments.

Coordination & Logistics

  • Act as a liaison between production, finished goods, and logistics teams.

  • Work with shipping personnel to ensure timely dispatch of completed materials.

  • Track and assist with managing finished painted goods inventory.

  • Ensure proper labeling and organization of painted products.

Process Improvement & Safety

  • Identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements to painting and unloading processes.

  • Assist in implementing lean manufacturing principles to improve productivity and reduce waste.

  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and operational standards.

  • Maintain a clean and organized unloading area to promote safety and efficiency.

  • Identify and report equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs.

Qualifications

  • Experience in industrial painting, structural steel fabrication, or manufacturing environments preferred.

  • Strong understanding of paint application standards and quality inspection practices.

  • Familiarity with AISC quality documentation is preferred.

  • Experience with production tracking systems such as PowerFab is a plus.

  • Ability to coordinate tasks across multiple departments and prioritize work effectively.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift, move, or assist with materials in an industrial environment.

  • Comfortable working in a fabrication shop or industrial setting around large steel components.
